The Art Institute of Chicago is one of the world’s premier art museums, housing the third largest permanent collection in the U.S.—which spans 5,000 years—and includes one of the world’s most notable collections of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art. The Art Institute collects, preserves, and displays works in every medium from all cultures and historical periods, and hosts special exhibitions as well. The Art Institute's Department of Modern and Contemporary Art is considered one of the finest and most comprehensive in the world, and is highlighted by the recent addition of the new Renzo Piano-designed Modern Wing. A pedestrian bridge, also designed by Renzo Piano, spans Washington Street and connects the Modern Wing to Chicago’s popular Millennium Park.
