DANCE
& MOVEMENT

Dance & Movement RSOs offer numerous performance opportunities, from classical ballet to north Indian Bhangra. Not a performer? No problem. Take advantage of lessons to learn ballroom, tango, or swing dancing.

Apsara

Apsara provides a forum for the practice, discussion, and performance of Indian classical dance (primarily Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Kuchipudi, and Odissi). It also seeks to increase awareness of South Asian culture within the University community by being inclusive of beginners, performing at various events on campus, and addressing a range of topics through thematic performances. Apsara is open to collaborating with other organizations for performances, workshops, and classes as well!

Ballroom and Latin Dance Association

BLDA teaches weekly lessons in both social Latin and competitive ballroom styles. We host a variety of social dance events on campus, and we also host monthly social Latin events at The Promontory in Hyde Park. In addition, the UChicago Competitive Ballroom Team BLDA trains and practices to travel around the Midwest and compete with other universities in our DanceSport circuit.

Chicago Raas Team

Chicago Raas welcomes all students and staff to join us in spreading a love for raas dance, cultural awareness, and involvement in the community! We welcome dancers from all backgrounds and embrace diversity in all forms.

Chicago Swing Dance Society

The Chicago Swing Dance Society (CSDS) is Chicago's longest-running non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion, expansion, and preservation of swing dancing, a family of vintage dances that originated in the 1920s in Harlem, New York. Throughout the year, CSDS organizes weekly lessons (free to students) and Saturday night Java Jives, which are open to the public. You don't need special shoes, previous dance experience, or a partner to attend our events, which range from themed dances to live band nights!

Dance Council

The UChicago Dance Council is a co-curricular program with Theater and Performance Studies, involving more than 300 students, seven productions annually, with a sweeping range of forms from Ballet to Bhangra.

Excolatur Dance Crew

EX Crew is an urban choreography group that was formed in 2009 with the hope of building a hip hop presence at UChicago and its neighboring community. Bonded by their love for urban dance, their goal is to foster an inclusive environment where dancers can express their creative talents and form new friendships.

Groove Theory

Groove Theory is a hip-hop dance crew dedicated to learning and performing the dance element of hip-hop culture. We study the foundations of various street styles including (but not limited to) breaking, waacking, popping, locking, house, and Chicago Footwork. Our main goal is not only to improve ourselves as dancers but also to spread awareness and share the history and culture of hip-hop in its true form.

Koong

Koong is a traditional Korean drumming RSO specializing in Samul-Nori. We seek to learn and perform the art, as well as share it with the University and greater Chicago community. We welcome all new members and encourage them to join!

NeXus Dance Collective

NeXus aims to connect people through their love of Korean pop music and dance. We provide a space for people of all backgrounds and levels of dance experience to learn and grow not only as dancers but more generally as artists and people as well.

Sensasia

Sensasia aims to provide a public platform and community for students to explore and celebrate the diversity of East and Southeast Asian heritages on campus through creative applications of the performing, material and culinary arts. Every year, we produce a cultural show featuring food and performing arts from across East and South Asia and perform in other cultural shows on campus.

Tap That!

As UChicago’s only tap dance RSO, Tap That! offers beginner, intermediate, and advanced classes throughout the academic year.

UC Dancers

Founded over forty years ago in 1978 by a group of students sharing a passion for movement and artistry, UC Dancers is the oldest dance company at the University of Chicago. We aim to foster an encouraging, supportive, and creative environment for dancers of all levels to express themselves through contemporary, lyrical, and jazz dance.

UChicago Bhangra

Bhangra refers to a form of music and dance that originated in the Punjab region of India and Pakistan. It was traditionally performed at harvest festival celebrations and the lyrics often refer to the history and hardships of the Punjab region. Through the Punjabi diaspora, however, Bhangra has grown in popularity all over the world, and it has also been influenced by Western styles. The UChicago Bhangra team (UCB) strives to promote Bhangra as a dance and art form to the university community and the greater Chicagoland area. Bhangra is fun to watch and even more fun to dance, so we invite you to dance along and cheer us on whenever you see us perform!

UChicago Maya

UChicago Maya is an audition-based contemporary fusion dance group that brings together dancers of different cultural and artistic dance backgrounds. Our company incorporates primarily contemporary, jazz, modern, and hip-hop styles into our choreography, and is entirely student-run.

University Ballet

University Ballet is a Recognized Student Organization at the University of Chicago that offers ballet to undergraduates, graduates, and members of the community. We promote a love of all dance, but specifically focus on enabling everyone to appreciate the art of ballet.
