ARTS ITINERARY

PILSEN

Rich in Latino culture, Pilsen is a neighborhood that overflows with music, art, culinary tradition, and nightlife. It’s home to award-winning restaurants, iconic music venues, and sensational murals as far as the eye can see. Maybe that’s why it was named one of the “12 Coolest Neighborhoods Around the World” by Forbes.

  1. Catch the 55 Bus from 55th Street & University (in front of the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago) and take it to Garfield & Ashland. Transfer to the 9 Bus heading north and get off at Ashland & 18th Street (about one hour in total).

  2. Walk 2 blocks North to find Café Jumping Bean (1439 W 18th St), hard to miss with its brightly colored and inviting facade. Grab a delicious cup of coffee and stay for lunch—if you can find a seat!

  3. Take a short walk west and then turn south on S Wood St. Walk west along 19th street and The National Museum of Mexican Art (1852 W 19th St) will be on your right. Check out their 11,000-piece permanent collection of Mexican art and culture for an immersive and personal experience. Entrance is free to everyone!

  4. Walk back to 18th street and head east to Taqueria Los Comales (1544 W. 18th St.), rated Pilsen’s “Best Taco Walk-Up Window” by South Side Weekly readers in 2020, is the perfect place to recharge after a day of walking. Don’t miss the refried beans, chicken tacos, and al pastor!

  5. If you head a little east to 18th and South Halsted, you’ll find yourself in the Pilsen East Arts District with 30+ art galleries throughout the neighborhood.

  6. Don’t forget to book yourself a Pilsen Public Art Tour (available May through October). PPAT is distinctly positioned to offer an in-depth educational experience, with tours connecting participants to the themes, history, and messages of local public art.
