MUSIC

Performing music is the perfect antidote to frequent late-night studying. Share your love of music by singing, playing, or teaching others.

A Capella Council

A Cappella Council is the council comprised of each of the 7 a cappella groups on UChicago’s campus. Each group has two(or more) representatives that typically meet biweekly to plan events and promote positive relationships within the a cappella community. The council also typically handles things such as the audition and callback process each fall, allowing each a cappella group to have access to the sound system for performances and rehearsals, sorting through any inter-group conflicts, and booking rehearsal rooms.

Chamber Music Organization

UChicago’s Chamber Music Organization is dedicated to promoting, playing, and performing chamber music. We are home to a diverse group of musicians, from winds to brass to strings, from med school to grad school to the college, and from wind ensemble to chamber orchestra to the USO! We love classical music, and we want to spread our love to you.

CMAC: The University of Chicago Glee Club

CMAC's repertoire is diverse, spanning genres from Renaissance polyphony to 1950s doo-wop and pop, English and Irish drinking songs, University of Chicago school songs, and much more. Our members share a passion for music and commitment to excellence. We are committed to promoting both the musical and personal development of our members, believing that a CMAC member should be a singer, but also a scholar and well-rounded individual.

Coalition for Jazz Education & Performance

CJEP is UChicago's official student jazz organization.  We seek to promote and celebrate jazz—its history, culture, and performance—in all settings. We organize jam sessions, performances, and other events to foster a jazz scene on campus and integrate it with the surrounding community.

Dirt Red Brass Band

We've been called everything from "the least controversial RSO on campus" to "the most high-octane fun." We’ve played with Vulfpeck, for the likes of Bernie Sanders, and we’re known to break floors. UChicago’s funkiest jazz/funk/pop brass band, Dirt Red Brass Band has existed on campus for the last seven years, and we perform around three times per quarter at events both on campus and in Chicago at large.

Koong

Koong is a traditional Korean drumming RSO specializing in Samul-Nori. We seek to learn and perform the art, as well as share it with the University and greater Chicago community. We welcome all new members and encourage them to join!

Make a Joyful Noise

Make a Joyful Noise is a music-ministry fellowship and our activities include rehearsals, concerts for the University and surrounding communities, and random fun events.

Medusa

Medusa is an award-winning, historically all female group with an extensive rep of bold and empowering music from all genres, covering everyone from Lady Gaga, Panic! At the Disco, and Hozier to Janelle Monáe, Lorde, and Lana del Rey. Medusa’s covers have been featured on various national compilation albums, and their most recent solo album, Medusa Complex, was met with critical acclaim.

Music Forum

The Music Forum is a creative vehicle meant to gather and cultivate an informal music community. We gather musicians and music lovers from all genres, skill levels, and backgrounds for all creative and social ends. Ultimately, we want to create a positive and creative space for music lovers to do music, whether you play 4 chords on the guitar or write symphonies.

Pep Band

The University of Chicago Pep Band, or simply "The Band", is currently comprised of 15-17 student members who play at school and community events throughout the year. In the Fall, we regularly play at as many home football games as we can manage (including Homecoming!), and in the Winter we play at a lot of home basketball games. In the spring, we perform at many community events such as C2E2.

Run For Cover

Run for Cover is a student-run historically male a cappella group of UChicago undergraduates, although we do accept auditions from graduate students and/or community members (the latter on an individual basis).

Soul Umoja Gospel Choir

Soul Umoja is the first and only gospel choir at the University of Chicago. Using traditional and contemporary gospel music, the choir ministers to audiences at the University, and in Chicago at large. Choir members exhibit a family-style commitment to one another and genuine concern for the well-being of God's people.

The Histones

The Histones is a “select” group of musically inclined STEM PhD students (and sometimes postdocs!) at the University of Chicago. The group was originally started in the BSD (hence the name!), but has since expanded into other STEM departments at UChicago including IME and PSD.

The Ransom Notes

The Ransom Notes is an all-gender a cappella group, that can be found performing on campus, at local venues in Hyde Park, and all around the city of Chicago. We annually compete in the ICCA competition, and bi-annually visit colleges and cities around the country, during our Spring Tour. We're a fun-loving group of musicians that loves each other as much as we love to sing. Our members most enjoy performing in informal arch sings, teaching music workshops to high school students around the South Side during our annual Chicago-focused Winter Tour, and singing carols at invited Holiday markets.

Unaccompanied Women

Unaccompanied Women is the oldest a cappella group at the University of Chicago, founded in 1989. On campus, we’re known for our annual Singing Valentines, our concerts and archsings, and our chaotic fun-loving spirit. We pride ourselves on telling stories through our music and spreading UDub love every chance we get.

Voices

Formerly known as Voices in Your Head, Voices is a student-run, co-ed a cappella group. Founded in 1998, the group has consisted of both undergraduate and graduate students whose studies range from Economics to Music to MD/PhD programs. Voices arranges all of its own music, spanning several genres. Its unique repertoire includes original pieces, as well as an eclectic mix of pop, R&B, rock, and alternative music.
