THEATER &

PERFORMANCE

There is no shortage of drama—or comedy!—on the UChicago campus.

Catcher in the Rhyme

Whether through open mics, weekly meetings, or hosting and attending events, Catcher in the Rhyme seeks to promote the voice of the individual with the power of a community. We're here to make sure that the many talented voices of our community have the chance to explore slam poetry, learn and grow as writers, performers, and people.

Commedia dell’Arte

Commedia dell’Arte aims to preserve and practice the art of Commedia on campus and to share it with the UChicago community. Commedia is a sixteenth-century art form hailing from Italia that marries physical theater, improvisation, mask work, song, dance, and slapstick humor.  It is the root of many of today’s popular art forms, such as ballet, opera, pantomime, and sketch comedy.  We collaborate in the process of bringing this unique tradition into today’s world with unbridled enjoyment.

Iris

Iris was started in the spring quarter of the 2015-2016 school year to provide an artistic space on campus to promote the voices of people of color. We focus on creating new work and also engaging in conversations with local artists of color in the Chicago area. With a commitment to social justice, the purpose of Iris is to create and provide a space at the University of Chicago for theatrical stories and engagement that uplifts the voices of people of color. Our vision is radically inclusive and socially conscious theater.

Le Vorris & Vox

Le Vorris & Vox strives to bring the incredible joys of the circus arts to anyone and everyone on campus. The members of Le Vorris & Vox work together to learn and train in partner acrobatics and tumbling, clowning, burlesque, fire manipulation, unicycling, and aerials. We also welcome those who are more interested in the technical aspects of the circus: mask and puppet makers, stage designers, writers, actors, dancers, musicians, improvers, jesters, etc. All levels of interest and skill are welcome!

Life of the Mic

Life of the Mic is The University of Chicago's student-run stand up comedy club! We host weekly writers' workshops, open mics and quarterly showcases.

Occam’s Razor

Occam's Razor™ is the University of Chicago's independent™ improv troupe™. We are comprised of a handful of UChicago students trying desperately to make some new friends. We practice twice per week and perform three free shows per quarter. New members are cast each fall and all members perform for as long as they remain in the group. We are all virgins. All of us. Not once have any one of us performed the sacred and revered act of intercourse. This is not a requirement, merely a coincidence. Please be kind.

Off-Off Campus

Off-Off Campus is the second oldest continuously running student improvisational theater troupe in the country with the first generation dating back to 1986.

The Dean’s Men

Founded in 2006, The Dean's Men is a student organization at the University of Chicago dedicated to the works of William Shakespeare. Through University Theater productions and other activities, we strive to bring the Bard's writing to the school and create a community of theater-makers in the process.

Underground Collective

The Underground Collective is a unique University of Chicago safe-space performance collective composed of student performers who put on themed quarterly showcases of entirely original work, including poetry, music, dance, comedy, theater, and multi-art collaborations. We are dedicated to creating a safe space for all participants, both audience members and performers.

University Theater

University Theater produces over thirty-five shows a year, ranging from staged-readings to full mainstage productions, reaching over ten thousand patrons a year. As one of the oldest student-run theaters in the country, UT provides students with the unique experience of having artistic control over every aspect of their work. We believe the best way to find your voice is to try it out. To this end, productions are designed, written, and directed by students, with the exception of the TAPS collaborative mainstage.
